How to protect your wardrobes from damp and mould

Wardrobes, with their closed and crowded rails, trap humidity easily, often leading to damp and mould. This can lead to your clothes smelling musty or even visible mould appearing in the wardrobe. Fortunately, a few simple tricks can help keep this at bay.

Keep the doors open

Closed wardrobe doors look neater and can allow you to show off special features like custom wardrobe doors, but do have some periods of time when the doors are left open. This will allow them to dry out.

Dehumidifier bags

Dehumidifier bags are cheap to buy. Hang them in the wardrobe, and the moisture-absorbing gel that they contain will draw excess moisture from the air before it settles into the wardrobe or clothes.

Clean your wardrobe

You no doubt regularly clean your clothes after wearing them, but do you ever clean your wardrobe? It only needs to be done once a year. Use a mild cleaner or make your own from diluted vinegar and use it on all the doors, walls, shelves, and rails of the wardrobe. This will make sure your wardrobe, including your custom wardrobe doors, remains in a clean condition. Make sure everything is dry before you put your clothes back inside.

Dry your clothes

Do not be tempted to put away your clothes while they’re still damp. Drying outside or near heat is best before putting them away. Try not to over-clutter your wardrobe. Space in between the clothes is a good way to allow air to circulate and reduce the chances of mould and damp forming.
