Brise Soleil Materials for Long-Term Performance

A long term solution is needed for a Brise Soleil system and hence the choice of material will dictate the amount of maintenance that is needed and the length of time that the system will perform effectively.

Aluminium

Aluminium is by far the most common choice for making a Brise Soleil system, and for good reason. Firstly, it doesn’t corrode, even in the worst of UK weather. Secondly, it’s very light which reduces the structural load placed on the building. Finally, a good quality powder coat finish, applied at 60-80 micrometers dry film thickness, can last up to 25 years before re-coating. Note: ensure that the fixings are made of a compatible alloy to avoid any risk of electrolytic corrosion.

Steel

Mild steel for example will give a stiffer system allowing longer spans. However it will require hot-dip galvanising followed by a top coat of powder paint. Stainless steel grade 316 is also available and is corrosion resistant. However this material is expensive and heavy.

Timber

Hardwood species in durability class 1 or 2 (as specified in timber durability classes and treatment specifications) can offer good performance. The key issue though is that they will need to be annually oiled and have the fixings inspected on a regular basis. The thermal movement of timber is greater than for metal, therefore the design of the joints will require sufficient clearance.

Fibre-Reinforced Composite

GRP (Fibre-Reinforced Composite) composite panels for Brise Soleil are lightweight, non-corroding and offer excellent dimensional stability over temperature. Such panels can form complex shapes, and are ready finished to any colour of the RAL palette to match the Architect’s choice of finish.

Glass or Polycarbonate
