Ford Steering Rack Fitment Checks
Fitting a replacement steering rack is not a difficult job to do, but there are a few things to check before and after.
Match the Rack to the Original
Check the new steering rack for correct fitment prior to fitting and compare it to the old unit. Check for the correct mounting point for mounting points, check length of rack etc. Note that some Ford Steering Racks vary between model families and therefore it is possible to obtain what appears to be a suitable replacement part from another variant, only to find it does not fit.
Check Track Rod End Threads and Torque
Inspect the track rod end threads for any damage. Also note the number of turns required to lock the nut, so you can attempt to lock the track rod end nuts in place to get the toe setting back to roughly the same amount as before. Use a torque wrench to lock the track rod end nuts using the correct torque setting for the type of nut being used as specified by the manufacturer.
Seat the Gaiter Clips Properly
The gaiters go on before the steering rack is fitted to the car. In fitting the new steering rack make sure all the gaiter clips are fully seat in their respective grooves in the rack body, otherwise the risk of dirt/moisture entry and subsequent early deterioration of the new steering rack body is likely to occur.
Confirm the Right Steering Fluid
Power Steering Fluid for Ford Steering Racks: You will need to check the correct power steering fluid for the Ford’s power steering pump as Hydraulic Steering Racks require the correct fluid for the power steering pump.
Check Tracking Afterwards
A Geometry Check After The Work Has Been Completed Is Also Required. This Check Ensures That The Steering Toe Is Correct And Will Prevent Rapid Tyre Wear Causing Possible Failure And Leaving The Vehicle Untowable Under Roadworthiness Tests And MOT Rules Covering The Steering System.
