Pipe Protector Sizes and Fit Guide

Choosing the right pipe protector is primarily a matter of measuring a few dimensions before ordering. (Of course, there are exceptions to this rule, but they are relatively rare).

Measure the Pipe Outer Diameter

When choosing a pipe protector, start with the outside of the pipe, not with the nominal bore size of the pipe printed on a plan. Measure the circumference of the outside of the pipe and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter. Typically residential water pipes have diameters ranging from 15mm up to 35mm. Check the actual diameter of your pipes before ordering.

Check the Sleeve Length You Need

The length of the sleeve needed will be the length of the pipe passing through a wall or the meter box frame (the exposed section of the pipe). Add a few centimeters to this measurement at each end of the pipe (the wall or frame). The sleeve must be large enough to cover the entire length of the pipe through the wall or meter box frame.

Match the Material to the Pipe

As a general rule, most standard pipe protectors are suitable for both plastic and copper pipes. However, in extreme temperature environments or in pipes running with chemicals, check compatibility before ordering.

Choose Between Split and Full-Sleeve Designs

A split sleeve design will clip around the existing pipe without the need to disconnect it and is therefore ideal for already plumbed installations. A full sleeve on the other hand would be used as part of the initial installation of the pipe through a wall or meter box, etc. For meter box entries and building penetrations approved standards for the size of the pipework at the boundary of the property need to be adhered to, a split design is generally the most suitable.

Check Wall or Frame Clearance

Will the sleeve fit within the aperture in the wall or the frame surrounding the pipe? Measure the aperture diameter and compare this with the outer diameter of the sleeve plus 2 mm.
